Can I charge more if its art?

Every workshop has too have a few steady clients,  bread and butter products that keep coming, and one of mine involves the manufacture of Professional Makeup Mirrors which are then sold by http://www.fitzrobbie.co.uk or available to hire through http://www.trafalgarlighting.co.uk . In discussion with both customers over the summer as an experiment I made several in different colours, and they were launched on an unsuspecting public last week.

The plan is that there are a number of stock colours, Black, Blue, Burgundy, Pink, and Gold, as well as being available in custom colours and finishes to match your décor, needless to say they immediately then got asked for Leopard Print fabric. As they say in all the best places – watch this space there nothing like a challenge

However one of the very first hire enquiries which turned into an order was from a well known High St Retailer who ordered 15 Black ones to take centre stage in their Christmas Advert, a quantity we hadn’t considered as they only had 2 in stock, so guess who got busy, manufacturing 20 Mirror Frames in a day, and if you pile them up artfully it becomes sculpture, which must make it worth more.

The end result can be seen below. They look good if I say so myself. image

I am rather proud of the gold ones. Years ago I did some work in the makeup counter of a major west end department store, which was divided up  into sections to appeal to different age groups. The area for ladies of a certain age which in their terms was anyone over 25 was very cunningly lit by up lighting onto a gold ceiling which created the most superb soft light which took all the wrinkles off your face. As a customer they grab you, put you in a chair, and slap all kinds of stuff on, and then hold up a mirror. Under that light they could have used emulsion paint and you would still look good. My version of that is a gold surround with high colour temperature LED lamps and its surprising just how much difference it makes, I was going to say even I look good, but that might be stretching it a little too far. But if I was a wedding makeup artist, or a makeup shop I would be seriously looking at one of these in gold

There is nothing like a challenge

imageThere’s nothing like a challenge and my latest project is most definitely one of those. Over the years I have made my fair share of wooden wheels for horse drawn carriages, usually something fairly substantial, with wheels in the region of 1.2 – 1.5mts diameter with 50-60mm rims known as felloes.

Howver my latest project is the refurbishment of a goat cart, or milk churn wagon which as you can see has seen its better days and  needs amongst other work, four new wheels, which with 20mm felloes are slightly finer than I am used too. I have made wheelbarrow wheels which are a similar diameter, and I have made bicycle wheels which are as fine but made with laminated wood. I have never made wheels this fine from solid wood, so I see a challenge ahead.

Having taken it apart, which didn’t take too much effort, frankly one good cough would have done it. I now have the dimensions I need to start building. The first job is shaping the 36 wooden spokes with a spoke shave, one or two is fine but to do 36 you need to wait until there is something good on the Radio. If you understand the reference to the Radio programme “The Archers” you will understand this is a very good time to make spokes.

Come back and see how I get on.

Is it a Flower or is it a lamp Post?

imageNow even by my standards this is an unusual project. I have started work with a lighting designer who has been engaged to light a new sculpture about to be installed in a public park in the near future. The sculpture is based on a flower design and the custodians of the park are taking a somewhat enlightened view and rather than have a conventional lamp post to support the lanterns are prepared to consider a lamp post in keeping with the surroundings and the sculpture.

Therefore my client has come up with the design of a curved steel structure in two parts, the stem and the curved leaf symbolising a Lily. Today I have been building a prototype of the curved top from welded steel rods which will then used to support a copper leaf in a lily shape. As luck would have it I have an elderly aunt called lily. Not sure how she will react when I tell her I have named a lamp post after her.

I do still make the occasional Carriage wheel so the gentle curve of the three main steels was a simple matter of running it through a tyre roller, and the hook on one end and the ring on the other was the product of 30 mins blacksmithing on the forge. Just to make life interesting I forge welded the ring, that is to say joined the steel together just using the heat of the fire which is great fun to do, but like so many things providing you don’t do it all day everyday day. I don’t get to blacksmith very often so its always a joy when I do, and when I am finished I have to boil the kettle on the forge for tea, you will never taste a better cup.

Assuming the powers that be like the prototype we then move to a slightly larger versions complete with a trunk so the whole thing finishes off at over 4mts tall , with  2mt copper leaves, and two LED lanterns. Stay watching to see how I get on.

I do need a Haircut

twofer

The Holiday is over and its back to work with a bang. I have a long standing Theatrical Equipment Hire Co client for whom over the years I have made all manner of items, with one of the most popular which they keep coming back for is Illuminated Theatrical Mirrors for their hire stock. I started with table top traditional illuminated mirrors, they then ordered  full length ones, then super wide ones, all of which they  hire out to fashion shows, film shoots, TV shows, and to my delight keep popping up in adverts.

Their most recent order which I can see myself making in quantity is a double mirror, a full length mirror on the front, a makeup mirror with table on the back. The idea being you can sit down do your makeup at the back and then move round to the front when dressed to see the full glorious effect, which with high colour temperature LED lamps, replicates full stage lighting.

Now as anyone who has ever see my videos will know I obviously don’t spend too long in a day in front of a mirror. Whilst I enjoy making these I do find the bending over fixing the mirrors in place to see my debonair image smiling back a little unsettling. They did suggest I should properly road test the mirrors by applying some makeup but my hearing had a momentary failure at that point. I much preferred the fairground mirrors I made a few months ago, at least then I could blame it on the mirror.

If you want to hire one they are hire@trafalgarlighting.co.uk or if your interested in buying one its info@heritagecraft.co.uk

The Worlds Most Comfortable Garden Bench

image I have been on holiday for the last week, we didn’t go anywhere but I didn’t go to work, so it counts as a holiday and its given me a chance to catch up with some jobs, and in between take it easy watching the grass grow. Once again I am struck by how uncomfortable Garden Chairs really are, their not comfortable and their not relaxing, which as I see it rather defeats the object. I find they don’t really fit my body shape, but then my dearly beloved who is shorter than me also complains about the lack of comfort, so time to do something about it.

Luckily the weather has been miserable so perfect for the odd hour or two in my workshop, and the end result as you can see from the picture above is a two seater rocking garden bench. I cant claim its an original idea, having said that I have never seen one and as usual there wasn’t a design. However what I did have was my dearly beloveds leg measurements, because its always the seat height and depth that gets her, whereas I always find seats too short in the back, so what we now have is a seat that fits us, wide enough for two, at the right height and with a high back, made from western Red cedar and finished with Danish Oil which gave a lovely finish. The Armrests have been made over size to support a cup of tea, forgetting of course your rocking.

Having now made it, all those in sit in it want one, but everyone wants an adjustment or an extra, all I wanted was a comfortable seat in which I can enjoy a cup of tea in the garden. But its got me thinking, now I just need a few days off and some dome nuts.

Mirror Mirror on the wall

image

Over the years I have made my fair share of mirrors for theatrical purposes, but this latest one is the most fun yet.

I am working with artist on an artwork for an exhibition next year on a project involving various mirrors and video which promises to be rather fun. As part of the preparatory work I needed to make a set of  Fairground or Funfair Mirrors, you remember the sort that distort your image, and it changes as the distance changes.

As a project its had its moments and I definitely learnt a lot. One of the secrets of being a craftsmen is knowing who the good suppliers are, who you can trust, and those you cant.  On this project I definitely met a few you cant. The suppliers of Mirror spray  are a particularly interesting lot, I tried a couple, big claims, high prices, and it didn’t work. but as you can see we finally have a prototype that works. Along the way I have experimented with bending the mirror in different directions, or in the case of this one several bends. It certainly works and no one can walk past it without stopping to play. It hilarious to watch which is the point of the artwork which I am really looking forward to.

One of my theatrical customers who already have a stock of my wheeled makeup mirrors, has placed their order for a set of five Fairground Mirrors for their hire stock, and I suspect they wont be the only order. One of the things they do is hire out Temporary Dressing rooms, usually with a mirror in . Now they are far to professional to consider it but imagine the reaction with a mirror that slightly distorts in the changing room. A definite case of does my bum look big in this, but doesn’t that make shopping fun

An ingredient too far. We try it.

image A couple of weeks ago a colleague of my daughters mentioned that she had been served at a hotel Smoked Butter, and how she had enjoyed it. When I first heard about it I was sceptical and I could see a few issues in the actual smoking, but the more I thought about, the more possibilities that appeared. I started to think about other dishes that would benefit from smoked butter, savoury pastry, scrambled egg with smoked butter could be good, but think how good potted shrimps would be. Its just got to be tried.

First I need some butter

If you have never made it Butter is probably one of the easiest things you can make. In this case I have used 1 litre of double cream, put it in a food mixer and set it going. After a few minute’s the cream thickens and becomes whipped cream, but if you keep mixing it starts to separate, into solids and liquid. The solid is the butter, and the liquid is Butter milk. Pour off the liquid and keep it its useful for all manner of things. You now need to wash the butter milk remains out of the butter so rinse it several times under a cold tap. You need to get it all out otherwise the butter will turn rancid within a day or two. I have no idea how long the butter will last, it doesn’t stick around that long.

Once the butter milk remains are all washed out you end up with basic butter, and this is when you add whatever you like. I put in Sea salt, you could add herbs, garlic, whatever works for you its now ready to use. I split mine into four and shaped with my Christmas present Butter Pats.

Now for the smoking. A while ago I made a smoker in the garden. If your interested I will put the link to the video at the end. The Butter goes on a rack in the smoker, along with some brie and prawns, its going to be a lovely lunch. The choice of wood sawdust makes quite a difference, it doesn’t always have to be oak. I used Apple a lovely fruity smoke.image image

After 45 minutes in the smoker and its ready. I reasoned we wanted a light smoke, the suggestion of smoke rather than heavy in your face smoke. I have to say it worked creamy packed full of flavour butter with smokey highlights. I am a convert, so thank you Elizabeth for the tip, this has now joined the repertoire.

A Real Artist at work

image

I have a customer http://www.backstageshop.co.uk who amongst other things is the UKs leading Theatre and special effects makeup supply company based in North London. Over the years I have made all manner of items for them, Electric Chairs, Gothic Candelabra, but most recently they have developed a steady trade in Illuminated Makeup Mirrors which I make.

This past weekend was the Theatre, and Film Makeup Artists Trade show in central London and I was asked if I could give them a hand on their stall and talk about the mirrors. Never one to pass on an interesting opportunity off I went and what an eye opener it was. I saw a demonstration of how to cut a throat on screen from the artists behind American Horror complete with spurting blood, and very realistic it was. Not something I had expected to see when I set out that morning.

Directly opposite us was a company that specialised in the products for high end prosethics for well known feature films. To promote this on the Saturday over the course of eight hours they transformed an attractive young lady into a balding old man complete with hairy chin.

Being as I was there for the whole time in between customers I was able to study form, and slowly watch the transformation as each piece was artfully applied and added too.

On the Sunday we were treated to the creation of what I can only describe as an seven foot strawberry, which took over 6 hours of painstaking work airbrushing, and moulding

What they both had in common was three incredible makeup artists at the top of their game, demonstrating, and freely sharing their knowledge, and creating the most stunning end results, it was an absolute pleasure to watch, and I did pick up a few tips along with a few pots of silicon so watch this space.

Is this an ingredient too far?

This weekend is a holiday weekend when I get an extra day to play and I think its time to fire up the smoker. If you have never read my blog before I built a smoker in the back garden a couple of years ago, to replace a portable one and have enjoyed myself with it ever since.

I wont bore you with the details of the smoker if your interested look at my earlier posts or videos in you tube, but it suffices to say it can be used as a cold smoker, where there is  smoke flavour but without heat, which means I can smoke cheese, in particular Brie which is a particular favourite.

My daughter has now sparked an argument when she suggests that as well as cheese I could smoke Butter. The idea apparently comes from a work colleague who we are told  has had this whilst staying in an upmarket hotel, and whilst I do like to think of myself as upmarket, but really smoked Butter…

My dearly beloved always the voice of reason, and particularly good at puncturing my pomposity is all in favour and reminded me of the time I made potted shrimps with smoked shrimps, which makes my mouth water just at the thought of it. Well how much better would that be if the butter they were potted in was smoked, how much better would savoury pastry be with smoked butter, or savoury scones. But really smoked butter.

Its really a step too far but its an intriguing prospect, I am just going to have to try it, but really smoked butter.

Now that’s so good

image

Last summer I built myself a wood fired bread oven in the garden, which is probably the best thing I have ever made, but the down side is that it’s in the garden, so we are dependant upon fine weather. Cooking in the rain isn’t recommended.

Still today the weather was good, and it’s the holiday weekend so time to fire up the oven.

image.jpgNow the bread was good, a mixture of Dark Rye and white bread flour, created a crusty loaf, which was as good as it gets. Someone asked me the other day “how long does it keep” to which the answer is we don’t know, there,s never any leftover.

But today’s experiment was croissant,s. Now on a weekend I love to have something special for breakfast and croissants are a favourite.I make the dough on Friday night, store it in the fridge, and cut off what I need each day  so we have fresh croissants every morning.

So as luck would have it I had some croissant dough available, and a hot wood fired oven so why not put the the two together. The end result was interesting in a good way. Smoky croissant.s may not be a breakfast choice, but with cheese inside it strikes me as an excellent lunch, or with a frankfurter inside for me that would, be a superb sausage roll.
